BET Suspends Soul Train and Hip Hop Awards Amid Programming Shift
By Aurax Desk | August 9, 2025
Black Entertainment Television (BET) has announced the indefinite suspension of the Soul Train and Hip Hop Awards, two iconic events that have long celebrated Black music and culture. The decision, confirmed by BET CEO Scott Mills, is part of a broader strategy to reevaluate the network's programming in light of changing media consumption trends.
The Soul Train Awards, which began in 1987, and the BET Hip Hop Awards, introduced in 2006, have traditionally honored key figures in R&B and hip-hop. However, both shows have seen a decline in viewership in recent years, leading BET to reassess their role on traditional television platforms.
Mills clarified that the awards are not being permanently canceled but are being reimagined to better align with modern media consumption. He suggested that both events may transition to digital or streaming platforms, reflecting the growing trend of online content delivery.
The suspension of these awards has raised concerns among fans and industry insiders who see them as essential for recognizing Black talent and preserving cultural heritage. While BET will continue airing other programs such as the NAACP Image Awards and the Stellar Awards, the suspension of the Soul Train and Hip Hop Awards marks a notable shift in the network's strategy for honoring Black music.
Currently, there is no confirmed timeline for the return of these awards, leaving their future uncertain.
