U.S. Embassy Compound Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Riyadh — Iranian forces attacked the United States Embassy in Saudi Arabia’s capital early Tuesday, hitting the diplomatic compound with two drones in a dramatic escalation of the broader Middle East conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence confirmed the strike, saying the drones caused a “limited fire” and minor material damage to the embassy building in Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter. No injuries were reported, as the facility was unoccupied at the time, according to Saudi officials.
In response to the attack, the U.S. Embassy issued a shelter‑in‑place advisory for American citizens in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran, urging people to stay away from the compound and calling for heightened vigilance.
The embassy strike came as part of an intensified Iranian campaign of retaliatory strikes across the Gulf following a series of U.S. and Israeli air assaults on Iranian targets. The conflict, which entered its fourth day, has seen dramatic exchanges of force, including strikes on military sites inside Iran and missile launches against Israel and U.S. allied bases.
President Donald Trump warned Tehran of looming retaliation, saying on social media that “you’ll find out soon what the retaliation will be,” linking the embassy attack to broader Iranian aggression against U.S. interests in the region.
The strike in Riyadh was not isolated. A similar drone attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait forced its temporary closure, and the U.S. State Department has ordered the evacuation of non‑essential personnel and families from several Middle Eastern nations amid rising threats.
The broader conflict has also impacted energy routes and global markets. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, threatening to fire on commercial shipping to enforce the shutdown, a move that could choke off a significant portion of global oil flow if carried out.
Meanwhile, heavy fighting continues across multiple fronts. Lebanese militant group Hezbollah has launched missiles at Israel, prompting further Israeli strikes, while Iranian retaliation has extended to Gulf states including the UAE and Qatar.
Saudi Arabia strongly condemned the embassy attack, with officials denouncing Iran’s actions as a breach of international norms and a threat to regional stability.
As civilians across the region grapple with rising casualties, evacuation orders and the specter of a protracted conflict, global leaders are calling for de‑escalation even as hostilities intensify.
