ABC has suspended the late-night program Jimmy Kimmel Live! after host Jimmy Kimmel made controversial comments in the wake of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s killing. The network’s move comes amid mounting criticism from political figures, broadcasting regulators, and affiliate station operators.
Kimmel’s remarks, delivered during a recent monologue, referenced the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk and highlighted how some commentators on the political right were framing the suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson. Law enforcement officials have stated that Robinson, now charged in the case, appeared to hold far-left views and had a history of online activity consistent with ideological radicalization.
The comments sparked swift backlash. Brendan Carr, chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), issued a public statement condemning Kimmel’s remarks and warned that the network could face scrutiny over whether it was fulfilling its obligations as a licensed broadcaster. Carr noted that the FCC expects stations to uphold standards in the public interest, raising questions about ABC’s handling of the matter.
In a separate move, Nexstar Media Group, the largest operator of ABC affiliate stations in the United States, announced it would no longer air Jimmy Kimmel Live! on its 32 ABC-branded channels. The company described Kimmel’s comments as inappropriate and inconsistent with the values of the communities it serves. This decision significantly reduced the show’s distribution footprint across the country.
The suspension by ABC removes the show from the network’s lineup for the foreseeable future, leaving its future uncertain. Disney, ABC’s parent company, has not announced whether the program will return, undergo changes, or be replaced by alternative programming.
The controversy underscores the heightened political sensitivity surrounding Kirk’s killing, which has drawn national attention not only for its impact on conservative circles but also for how it has been covered and discussed in the media. Kimmel’s situation also highlights the broader debate over the boundaries of satire and commentary in late-night television, especially when intersecting with violent or politically charged events.
