CCTV Captures Fatal Police Shooting in St Augustine as Courier Dies, Partner Critically Wounded
Police body-camera policy, the use of force during vehicle pursuits, and accountability in police-involved shootings are under scrutiny after CCTV footage emerged showing officers firing on a car in St Augustine, leaving a 31-year-old courier dead and his common-law wife critically injured.

Trinidad and Tobago- A police-involved shooting has left a man dead and his common-law wife in critical condition. Captured on CCTV on January 20, 2026, is the fatal shooting of Joshua Samaroo aged 31, a courier, and the wounding of Kaia Sealy, who were both seated in a white Toyota Aqua that had run off the road near the corner of Bassie Street Extension and Dookiesingh Street, St Augustine.
The video shows the mentioned Toyota Aqua running off the road into a drain and coming to a stop with a marked Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Vehicle that was in pursuit with sirens blaring, coming to a stop a few meters away from the Aqua. Moments later, officers exited the vehicle with their firearms drawn, and the driver-side window glass of the Aqua went down with what appeared to be the arms of the driver raised and stretched through the window. Very soon afterward, there was a volley of bullets directed toward the vehicle by the officers. The video also shows the officers checking the vehicle shortly after the shooting had stopped and later on placing what appeared to be the victims in the tailgate of the said police vehicle. It was later disclosed that Joshus Samaroo had later succumbed to his injuries at his Mt Hope Medical Hospital.
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service has since acknowledged the shooting incident and has released this statement on its Facebook page:
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is aware of the footage now circulating and understands the public concern it has generated. Any loss of life during a police operation is a matter we treat with the utmost seriousness.
At this time, the circumstances surrounding the incident are the subject of an active investigation by the police and the Police Complaints Authority. As is standard practice, the TTPS will not comment on specific details or draw conclusions while that process is ongoing. We also remain committed to fully cooperating with the PCA to ensure that all facts are thoroughly and impartially examined.
With respect to body-worn cameras, the Service has consistently supported the use of technology that enhances transparency, accountability, and public trust.
The TTPS recognizes the importance of maintaining public confidence and assures the public that any findings arising from the investigative process will be treated with the seriousness they deserve, and appropriate action taken where necessary.

The couple shared a 5-year-old son together and the deceased had an older child from a previous relationship, as family members of the deceased as well as the injured express outrage and seek answers as to what transpired to cause this horrific event, but of up to news time no information had been forthcoming. The incident is also being investigated by the Police Complaints Authority (PCA)
