Thousands gathered on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed earlier this month during a university speaking event in Utah. The memorial drew national attention, with former President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance among the scheduled speakers.
Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was killed on September 10 while addressing students at Utah Valley University. Prosecutors have charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with his murder and announced plans to pursue the death penalty.
The Arizona service was organized on a large scale, with law enforcement preparing for crowds in the tens of thousands. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security designated the gathering as a Special Event Assessment Rating (SEAR) Level 1, the highest federal classification for security support, on par with events such as the Super Bowl or presidential inaugurations.
Security concerns heightened when authorities arrested 42-year-old Joshua Runkles outside the stadium ahead of the memorial. He was allegedly carrying a firearm and a knife while impersonating a law enforcement officer. Event organizers confirmed that he was not affiliated with their security team. Runkles was later released on bond pending further legal proceedings.
Following Kirk’s death, Turning Point USA announced that his widow, Erika Kirk, will assume leadership of the organization as both chief executive officer and chair of the board.
The memorial and surrounding events have intensified discussion about political violence in the United States. For many supporters, the gathering underscored Kirk’s national influence and the risks faced by high-profile political figures.
