British police on Thursday arrested Prince Andrew—now formally known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor—on suspicion of misconduct in public office, in a dramatic escalation of the long-running scandal tied to his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Authorities said a man in his sixties from Norfolk was taken into custody while officers carried out searches at properties in Berkshire and Norfolk as part of the investigation.
According to investigators, the probe centers on claims that Andrew, while serving as the United Kingdom’s trade envoy, shared confidential government travel reports with Epstein. These alleged disclosures relate to official visits to Southeast Asia around 2010 and 2011.
The allegations surfaced after documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice in early 2026 included emails and other materials linked to the case. The files also reportedly contained a photograph of Andrew with a woman shown during a U.S. congressional hearing.
Police say the arrest is part of an active investigation into suspected misconduct in public office, a serious offense under British law that involves the abuse or neglect of official responsibilities.
In an official statement, King Charles III said he learned of the arrest “with deepest concern,” adding that authorities have the full cooperation of the royal household.
The monarch stressed that “the law must take its course” and indicated he would not comment further while the investigation continues.
Buckingham Palace also signaled its willingness to assist investigators if requested, reflecting the seriousness of the situation and the potential implications for the royal family.
The arrest marks an unprecedented moment in modern British royal history. Reports indicate Andrew is the first senior royal to be arrested in modern times, underscoring the gravity of the investigation and the level of scrutiny surrounding his past associations.
The case has revived global attention on Andrew’s long-criticized relationship with Epstein, which previously led to his withdrawal from public duties and loss of royal titles.
Andrew remains in police custody as investigators continue searches and review evidence. Authorities have emphasized that the case is active and subject to legal process, with further updates expected as the investigation unfolds.
