Authorities in Pennsylvania have identified the individual suspected of fatally shooting three police officers in York County on Tuesday as 38-year-old Matthew James Ruth. Law enforcement officials confirmed that Ruth died during the incident.
According to investigators, officers were responding to a domestic-related call at a home in the borough of Springettsbury when gunfire broke out. Five officers were struck in total, three of whom died from their injuries. Two others were treated for wounds but are expected to survive.
The names of the fallen officers have not yet been released publicly as authorities continue notifying families and coordinating official statements. Local officials described the shooting as one of the deadliest incidents for law enforcement in Pennsylvania in recent memory.
The Pennsylvania State Police and York County authorities are conducting a joint investigation into the events leading up to the violence.
