Officials from the United States, Denmark and Greenland concluded high-level talks in Washington amid renewed attention on Greenland’s strategic importance, with Danish and Greenland representatives stating that fundamental differences remain between their position and that of the U.S. administration.
The meeting involved U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Denmark’s foreign minister, and Greenland’s foreign minister. Discussions centered on Arctic security, defense cooperation and Greenland’s geopolitical role following public remarks by President Donald Trump emphasizing U.S. strategic interests in the territory.
After the talks, Danish and Greenland officials acknowledged that while dialogue was constructive, there are fundamental disagreements regarding Greenland’s future and sovereignty. They reiterated that Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and that any decisions affecting its status must respect existing constitutional arrangements and the principle of self-determination.
U.S. officials underscored Greenland’s importance to national and allied security, citing its location in the Arctic and growing global competition in the region. The administration maintained that strengthening U.S. influence in Greenland is necessary to address emerging security challenges.
Denmark and Greenland countered that existing defense agreements already provide the United States with significant military access and cooperation, arguing that additional measures should occur within established frameworks rather than through changes to sovereignty or governance.
Despite the differences, all parties agreed to continue discussions through a joint working group, intended to examine security cooperation and regional stability in the Arctic. Danish officials described the process as ongoing but stressed that core disagreements remain unresolved.
In parallel, Denmark announced plans to enhance its defense posture in the Arctic and North Atlantic, including closer coordination with NATO allies, as attention on the region continues to intensify.
The talks highlighted both the strategic importance of Greenland and the diplomatic strain created by diverging views among close allies on how that importance should be managed.
