A day at one of Tobago’s most popular beaches ended in tragedy on Wednesday when a seven-year-old girl was killed after a jet ski crashed into swimmers at Pigeon Point. The child, identified as Angelica Jogie, had been in the water with relatives in a designated bathing area when the watercraft breached safety barriers and struck the group.
The impact caused panic among beachgoers as family members rushed to pull the injured child from the water. Lifeguards and a doctor who happened to be on the beach attempted CPR, but she remained unresponsive. She was later taken to Scarborough General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Several relatives, including her parents and uncle, were also injured in the collision.
The incident has raised concerns over jet ski safety and enforcement in designated bathing zones.
Authorities say the jet ski operator fled the scene immediately after the incident, prompting a police manhunt. Officials confirmed that the craft had entered a zone clearly marked for swimmers only, raising serious concerns about enforcement and safety at the popular tourist site.
In response, the Tobago House of Assembly ordered the temporary closure of Pigeon Point and the wider Buccoo Reef area to facilitate investigations. Chief Secretary Farley Augustine expressed condolences to the family and warned that stricter regulations and enforcement would be implemented to prevent similar tragedies.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the jet ski operator who fled the scene.
The incident has sparked outrage among citizens and renewed calls for tighter control of jet ski operations, with many questioning how the operator was able to enter a restricted bathing zone. As investigations continue, authorities are urging the individual responsible to come forward while police appeal to the public for information.
