Trinidad Cabinet Announces UWI Debe Campus Repairs, ASJA Cemetery Land Lease and Expanded Eid Funding

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago held its post-cabinet media briefing on March 19th, 2026, ahead of Eid al-Fitr, and 3 major decisions were outlined by the minister in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Mr Saadam Hosein.

The government has begun repair work to the campus and has targeted it to be reopened by the start of the next academic year. The government also emphasises that they alone are responsible for the repairing and reopening of the campus that was neglected for some time.
2. Land Leased for a Muslim Cemetery (Chagaunas)
A 199-year land lease of over 3 hectares has been granted to be used as a cemetery by the Anjuman Sunnat-ul-Jamaat Association (ASJA), ending 22 years of the land not being able to be used for burials.
3. Expansion of Eid Funding
An approval by the Cabinet or the expansion of Eid celebrations funding from 12 to 22 organisations with a significant increase in the allocations.
