Tyler James Robinson, a 22-year-old student from Utah, has been formally charged in connection with the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Prosecutors announced a series of charges during his first court appearance, including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child.
The shooting occurred on September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University in Orem, where Kirk was delivering a public address. Investigators say a bolt-action rifle was fired from a rooftop, striking Kirk in the neck. He was transported to a hospital but later died from his injuries.
Evidence presented by prosecutors includes DNA samples allegedly tying Robinson to the weapon and related items. Reports indicate that his DNA was found on the rifle trigger, a towel used to wrap the gun, and a screwdriver left at the scene. Surveillance footage, along with Robinson’s online activity and communications, are also being examined as part of the case.
Robinson was taken into custody more than 30 hours after the incident at his parents’ home. Authorities said he initially resisted surrender but later gave himself up after images of the suspect were widely circulated and recognized by acquaintances.
The Utah County Attorney’s Office has signaled that it may seek the death penalty if Robinson is convicted of aggravated murder. While investigators continue to explore possible motives, no definitive explanation has been released. Officials have noted that Robinson’s personal political beliefs appeared to diverge from those of his family, but further details remain under review.
The case is now moving through the courts, with Robinson facing the possibility of the most severe penalties under Utah law.
