Image of the suspected drug-smuggling boat in question
Accusations of foul play have been placed on the United States for its strikes on suspected drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean last year. These accusations point to the possible committal of war crimes, mainly the act of perfidy, a term used to describe deception in warfare, often by pretense with the view of harming or killing enemy combatants.
In this case, the issues surround the reports that the U.S. used an aircraft painted to resemble a civilian aircraft with its weapons hidden in the fuselage other than on its wings, which represents a form of disguise in contravention of international war laws and constitutes a war crime.
This report points to the controversial September of last year strike where 11 people were killed, where 2 of the deceased survived the initial strike but were later killed after they were seen holding on to the wreckage of the boat. The same strike by the U.S. that claims were made that the U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth ordered that everyone should be killed even after the initial strike and after seeing the 2 men still alive.
With ongoing questions about the legality of these strikes, this is another development that has conjured up debate and even outright damning of the United States tactics in its war on illicit drugs.
Many await the response to this accusation by the Pentagon and the international community in these times of conflict.
