FBI Director Kash Patel is facing criticism after reports revealed he participated in a private snorkeling excursion near the USS Arizona Memorial during an official trip to Hawaii. The visit has renewed debate over the use of official travel and access to sensitive memorial sites.
The USS Arizona Memorial remains one of America’s most solemn military memorial sites.
FBI Director Kash Patel is under renewed scrutiny after government emails revealed he took part in a private snorkeling excursion near the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor during an official visit to Hawaii last year.
According to reports from multiple U.S. media outlets, the military-coordinated event took place during Patel’s August 2025 trip to Hawaii, where he also visited the FBI’s Honolulu field office and met with local law enforcement officials. The snorkeling activity was not publicly disclosed in FBI announcements surrounding the trip.
The USS Arizona Memorial marks the resting place of more than 900 U.S. service members killed during Japan’s 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Public access to the waters surrounding the wreck is heavily restricted, with diving and snorkeling generally prohibited except for limited official or ceremonial purposes.
FBI Director Kash Patel is facing criticism over a previously undisclosed Pearl Harbor excursion.
The reports sparked criticism from some veterans, historians and ethics observers who questioned whether the excursion was appropriate at a site regarded as a military cemetery. Others defended the visit, arguing it could be viewed as part of an official historical tour connected to Patel’s government duties.
An FBI spokesperson said the event was organized by regional military commanders and described it as part of an interagency engagement honoring those killed in the Pearl Harbor attack. The bureau also rejected suggestions that the outing was recreational tourism.
The controversy adds to broader scrutiny surrounding Patel’s travel and conduct since becoming FBI director. Recent reports have examined his use of government aircraft, appearances at sporting events and other travel-related activities that critics say blur the line between official business and personal recreation.
