The U.S. Senate narrowly voted down a Democratic amendment that would have permanently barred President Donald Trump from creating a controversial $1.8 billion settlement fund, exposing divisions within the Republican Party as lawmakers debate a major immigration enforcement funding package.
U.S. senators debate a Democratic amendment seeking to block President Trump’s proposed $1.8 billion settlement fund during consideration of a major immigration enforcement funding bill.
The Senate on Thursday rejected a Democratic-led effort to block the creation of a proposed $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization” fund that supporters say would compensate individuals who were unfairly targeted by government actions. The amendment, championed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, failed by a narrow margin as Republicans worked to advance a roughly $70 billion bill to fund immigration enforcement agencies, including ICE and the Border Patrol. Several Republicans broke with their party to support the amendment, highlighting growing unease over the fund’s purpose and legality.
The vote comes despite recent statements from Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche that the administration was no longer pursuing the fund. However, President Donald Trump has continued to defend the proposal, creating uncertainty about its future. The debate has complicated Republican efforts to pass the immigration funding measure and revealed fractures within the GOP as lawmakers weigh support for Trump's priorities ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
