President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 33%, the lowest level of his current presidency, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. The decline comes as Americans express growing concern about the prolonged U.S. war with Iran, rising gasoline prices and the broader economic effects of the conflict, with the 2026 midterm elections approaching.
Higher gasoline prices are among the economic concerns weighing on Americans as the Iran conflict continues.
The Reuters/Ipsos survey, conducted Aug. 14-17 among 1,166 U.S. adults, found that 64% disapproved of Trump’s performance, giving him a negative 31-point approval margin. His approval fell from 35% in the previous Reuters/Ipsos survey, while the latest result matches the lowest level recorded during his first term in December 2017. The poll also found that about 80% of Americans believe the war with Iran will continue for a long time, while only about one in five respondents said the conflict was worth fighting.
The findings come as the Iran conflict increasingly affects economic conditions in the United States and becomes a political issue ahead of the November midterm elections. The fighting has disrupted oil markets and contributed to higher gasoline prices, while Democrats have gained an advantage over Republicans on several economic issues in the latest polling. Republicans retain an edge on immigration, but Reuters reported that the party's advantage on the issue has narrowed substantially since Trump returned to office. The poll provides a snapshot of public sentiment rather than a prediction of the midterm outcome, but Trump's declining approval places his administration under increased political pressure as the election approaches.
