Republican Rep. Thomas Massie lost his Kentucky primary race to Trump-endorsed challenger Ed Gallrein in one of the most closely watched congressional contests of 2026. The result underscored former President Donald Trump’s continued influence over Republican primary voters and internal party politics.
The Senate voted to advance a bipartisan resolution addressing presidential war powers related to Iran.
Republican Congressman Thomas Massie was defeated Tuesday in Kentucky’s GOP primary by former Navy SEAL and farmer Ed Gallrein, delivering a significant political victory for President Donald Trump and his allies.
Gallrein’s victory in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District followed months of intense campaigning and heavy outside spending that turned the race into one of the most expensive House primaries in U.S. history. Trump had personally targeted Massie after repeated disagreements with the congressman over foreign policy, government spending and other Republican priorities during Trump’s second administration.
Massie, a seven-term lawmaker known for his libertarian positions and willingness to oppose party leadership, had long maintained a strong political base in northern Kentucky. However, Trump’s endorsement of Gallrein transformed the race into a national test of loyalty within the Republican Party.
Political action committees aligned with Trump and other conservative groups poured millions of dollars into advertising and voter outreach efforts supporting Gallrein. The challenger campaigned as a strong supporter of Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement and argued the district needed a representative more aligned with the president’s agenda.
The primary outcome is expected to intensify discussion over Trump’s continued hold on Republican politics ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Several Republican lawmakers who publicly criticized or opposed Trump in recent years have either lost primaries, retired or faced major political pressure from Trump-backed challengers.
The Kentucky race also unfolded alongside other closely watched Republican contests across the country, including statewide races in Georgia, Alabama and Pennsylvania. Analysts viewed the results as an important indicator of Trump’s ability to shape candidate selection within the party despite broader debates about the GOP’s future direction.
Massie had built a national profile over the years through opposition to bipartisan spending measures, surveillance programs and military intervention overseas. His defeat removes one of the more independent voices within the House Republican conference and could further strengthen Trump-aligned influence in Congress.
Gallrein is now expected to advance to the general election in a district that has historically favored Republican candidates.
