Trump claims private support for Iran strikes

US President Donald Trump has sparked controversy after claiming that a former American president privately told him he supported the bombing of Iran.

Speaking publicly, Trump said one of his predecessors told him he regretted not carrying out similar military action during his own time in office. However, Trump declined to name the individual, saying he did not want to “embarrass” them.

The claim comes amid ongoing US military operations targeting Iranian sites as tensions in the region continue to escalate.

Former presidents swiftly deny claim

The response from former US leaders was immediate and unified.

Representatives for all four living former presidents — Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Joe Biden — said none of them had spoken with Trump recently, directly contradicting his account.

Aides described the claim as unfounded, noting there had been no such communication between Trump and any of the former presidents.

The denials underscore the political sensitivity surrounding the ongoing conflict with Iran and the lack of consensus among US leaders.

Rising tensions amid Iran conflict

Trump’s remarks come as the United States intensifies its military campaign against Iran, including large-scale airstrikes on key strategic targets.

The administration has claimed significant damage to Iranian military infrastructure, while critics warn of escalating regional instability and humanitarian risks.

The conflict has already disrupted global oil routes and heightened fears of a broader war in the Middle East.

A pattern of disputed statements

This is not the first time Trump’s statements about the conflict have drawn scrutiny.

Analysts note that his claim about private support from a former president cannot be independently verified and is contradicted by all available evidence.

The episode highlights the increasingly politicised nature of the Iran conflict, where messaging and perception play a key role alongside military developments.

What it means politically

The controversy adds another layer of tension to an already polarised political environment in the United States.

With former presidents publicly distancing themselves from Trump’s claims, the episode underscores divisions over the handling of the Iran conflict — both domestically and internationally.

As the situation evolves, questions remain not only about the military campaign itself, but also about the credibility of statements coming from the highest levels of leadership.
