West Indies opened the Sobers-Tissera Trophy series with one of the most dominant Test victories in their recent history, overwhelming Sri Lanka by an innings and 217 runs in Antigua. The result gave the Caribbean side a 1-0 lead in the two-match series and highlighted a resurgent batting lineup backed by a relentless pace attack.
West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach celebrates during the first Test, where he also reached the milestone of 300 career Test wickets.
West Indies completed a commanding victory over Sri Lanka on the fourth day of the first Test at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. After posting a massive 626 for 9 declared, the hosts dismissed Sri Lanka for 308 in their first innings and then bowled them out for 101 in the follow-on to seal victory by an innings and 217 runs. The winning margin ranks among the largest Test victories recorded by West Indies and marked an impressive start to Roston Chase's tenure as Test captain.
The foundation of the victory came from an outstanding batting performance led by Amir Jangoo, who scored a career-best 233, and captain Roston Chase, who added 194 during a record partnership that transformed the match after the home side had faced early pressure. Sri Lanka's first innings was anchored by captain Dhananjaya de Silva's 120, but the visitors were unable to build substantial support around him. West Indies' bowlers maintained control throughout the contest, repeatedly exposing weaknesses in Sri Lanka's batting lineup.
Sri Lanka resumed the final stages of the match needing a major recovery but collapsed under sustained pressure from the West Indies pace attack. Veteran fast bowler Kemar Roach reached the milestone of 300 Test wickets during the match, becoming only the fifth West Indies bowler to achieve the feat. The victory gives West Indies momentum heading into the second and final Test as they seek their first Sobers-Tissera Trophy series win since the competition was established in 2015.
