Jorge Messi died Friday night at a medical clinic in Rosario after a prolonged illness, his family confirmed. He was 68. He had spent his final months receiving treatment while moving between a medical facility and his home, where he was surrounded by his wife, Celia, and their children. Lionel Messi, who plays for Inter Miami and captains Argentina, is expected to travel from Miami to Rosario for a private wake.
Jorge played a significant role in his son's rise from a young player in Rosario to one of the world's most accomplished footballers. He helped guide Messi during his formative years and later served as his representative, remaining closely involved in his son's professional affairs. Messi maintained a close relationship with his father throughout his career, including after moving to Spain as a teenager to join Barcelona's youth system.
Tributes followed from clubs and football organizations in Argentina and abroad, including Real Madrid, Newell's Old Boys, the Argentine Football Association and Barcelona. The AFA said a minute of silence would be observed at matches across Argentina's football divisions, with players, coaches and referees wearing black armbands. Jorge's remains are expected to be buried at El Prado private cemetery in Perez, near Rosario.
