Tiger Woods Gets Five-Year License Suspension in Plea Deal

Tiger Woods will lose his driver’s license for five years after reaching a plea agreement stemming from a March rollover crash in Florida. The 15-time major champion avoided jail after the original DUI charge was reduced.

Woods appeared in Martin County court on Sept. 2 and entered a no-contest plea to a reduced reckless-driving charge and a careless-driving citation. Judge Darren Steele ordered the two five-year license suspensions to run concurrently and imposed about $1,500 in fines. The more serious DUI charge was dropped, and Woods has 30 days to appeal. The crash on Jupiter Island caused no injuries.
Woods, 50, initially pleaded not guilty after authorities said he crashed his SUV while attempting to pass another vehicle. Investigators found two hydrocodone pills in his possession and reported signs they believed were consistent with impairment, but prosecutors said toxicologists found insufficient evidence to prove that the medication impaired him. Woods had previously been granted permission to travel for medical treatment and provided prescription and hospital records during the investigation.
The case adds to a difficult period for Woods, who has not played competitively since the 2024 British Open while dealing with continuing health and injury issues. Despite those setbacks, he remains one of golf’s most accomplished players, with 15 major championships and 82 PGA Tour victories, tied for the tour record with Sam Snead.
