Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath has confirmed that his security has been increased following a police threat assessment. The move comes after investigators received information suggesting he could be the target of a criminal plot.
Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath said his security detail has been strengthened after police advised him of a potential threat to his safety. Padarath said the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service recommended enhanced protection following intelligence gathered during an ongoing criminal investigation. He said the matter is being handled by the Special Branch, which is conducting a security assessment and monitoring the situation.
Padarath confirmed the additional security measures after reports that investigators received information from an alleged gang member indicating the minister could be the target of a planned attack. He said he has confidence in the police service and is cooperating fully with law enforcement while continuing to carry out his ministerial duties. Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or announced arrests directly linked to the reported threat.
The increased security comes as Trinidad and Tobago remains under a nationwide state of emergency aimed at disrupting gang-related violence and organized crime. Senior government officials have said security agencies continue to assess threats against public officials as part of broader efforts to combat criminal activity. Police have not released further details about the intelligence, citing the ongoing investigation.
