Official at the handing over of land to the Chinmaya Mission Trinidad and Tobago
The government of Trinidad and Tobago has granted a 12-acre state land lease in Calcutta #1 to Chinmaya Mission Trinidad and Tobago, paving the way for a major expansion of the mission’s educational institution, Chinmaya Vidyalaya.
Speaking at the official lease handover ceremony, Minister of Land and Legal Affairs Saddam Hosein said the cabinet’s approval represents more than a routine administrative act, describing it as a commitment to the country’s future through education.
He said the land is being leased at an institutional rate of $1 per year, a symbolic annual fee intended to support the mission’s ability to invest in facilities and student services. The new parcel significantly increases the space available to the school, which has outgrown its existing footprint.
Officials highlighted the rapid growth of Chinmaya Vidyalaya since its establishment in 2003. The school began with just three students, holding classes at the Chinmaya Ashram. It now serves more than 400 students and has achieved a 100% pass rate, a record that speakers at the event called “absolutely commendable.”
The institution’s leaders say the additional land will allow them to expand the campus, add new buildings and widen the range of educational programs. Swami Prakash Ananda Ji, head of Chinmaya Mission Trinidad and Tobago, thanked the government for what he described as its efficiency in delivering the lease and said the decision would significantly support the school’s continued development.
Mission representatives also noted that Trinidad and Tobago has played a pioneering role in the global Chinmaya movement. Before the creation of Chinmaya Vidyalaya in Calcutta #1, there were no Chinmaya schools outside India, they said. The Trinidad and Tobago initiative is seen as a model for taking the mission’s brand of values-based, holistic education to other parts of the world.
The lease handover comes as Chinmaya Mission marks its 75th anniversary globally, linking the local milestone to the broader history of the organization’s educational and spiritual work.
Education Minister Dr. Michael Dowlath told attendees that denominational and faith-based schools remain an important part of the national education system. He said the government is committed to expanding equitable access to learning and strengthening partnerships with denominational boards and faith-based organizations to ensure that every child has an opportunity to receive quality education.
Member of Parliament for Couva South Barry Padarath said he hoped the institution would grow “from strength to strength” and expressed a desire to see it develop into a full campus. He praised the mission’s leadership for its vision, hard work and dedication and said the new lease should serve as a foundation for long-term growth.
School administrator Jai Karan Can described the lease as the culmination of a long and difficult process. He said the mission had applied for land years ago with the aim of constructing a purpose-built educational institution. The effort, he said, took 13 years before approval was finally granted.
He called the handover a historic day for the school and credited “divine intervention” for the eventual success of the application. For teachers, students and supporters, the ceremony was portrayed as both the end of a protracted struggle and the beginning of a new phase of development.
With the 12-acre lease now in place, Chinmaya Mission Trinidad and Tobago is planning to transform Chinmaya Vidyalaya from a single school into a larger campus over time. Officials say the expansion will allow the institution to accommodate more students, enhance its facilities and deepen its contribution to the educational landscape of Trinidad and Tobago.
