Police are investigating an armed robbery at a medical centre in St. Augustine after a man posing as a patient allegedly helped carry out the heist. Two doctors and another man were restrained while the suspects escaped with cash, jewelry and other valuables.
Police are searching for three men following an armed robbery at the Life Care Medical and Dental Centre in St. Augustine on Wednesday evening after one of the suspects allegedly entered the facility posing as a patient. Investigators said the man completed intake paperwork before being taken to an examination room, where a second suspect entered, announced a robbery and restrained a 54-year-old physician with cable ties. The assailants then stole the doctor's gold jewelry before moving him to another room.
A second 54-year-old doctor responded after hearing screams but was also confronted by one of the gunmen, forced into a room and restrained. A 36-year-old man at the clinic was robbed of his cellphone before being tied up with the two doctors. After freeing himself about 15 minutes later, one of the physicians discovered that approximately US$20,000 and TT$40,000 in cash had been stolen from a desk drawer. The three suspects fled before police arrived, and no injuries were reported.
The robbery adds to ongoing concerns over violent crime targeting businesses and professionals in Trinidad and Tobago. Medical facilities have generally been viewed as low-risk environments, but security experts have increasingly urged businesses and healthcare providers to strengthen access controls, surveillance systems and emergency response procedures as criminals employ more sophisticated tactics, including deception, to gain entry. Police have launched an investigation and are seeking information that could assist in identifying the suspects.
