Kaia Sealy was taken into police custody shortly after arriving at Piarco International Airport early Tuesday following a period of medical treatment in the United States. Authorities are moving forward with charges linked to an investigation into the fatal police-involved shooting of her boyfriend, Joshua Samaroo.
Sealy was arrested minutes after her flight landed at Piarco International Airport during the early hours of the morning. According to reports, police officers met Sealy upon her arrival and escorted her into custody before transporting her from the airport. Her attorney, Fayola Sandy, said she was surprised to learn that Sealy had been detained immediately after landing. Sealy had been travelling with her mother, who reportedly indicated that the interaction between police officers and Sealy was professional and non-confrontational.
Following her arrest, Sealy was taken to the Arouca Police Station, where officials reportedly determined that suitable accommodations and facilities were available to address her medical needs. Sealy had spent several months in the United States receiving treatment for injuries sustained during an incident in December 2025 in which police officers opened fire on a vehicle carrying Sealy and Samaroo. Samaroo was killed during the encounter, while Sealy survived after receiving extensive medical care.
The case has attracted significant public attention because it involves both a fatal police shooting and subsequent criminal allegations against a surviving occupant of the vehicle. Authorities have indicated that Sealy faces multiple charges arising from the circumstances surrounding the incident. The matter is expected to proceed through the courts in the coming weeks, where prosecutors will present their case and Sealy will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations. As with all criminal proceedings, the charges remain allegations until proven in court.
