Additional criminal charges have been filed against Kaia Sealy in connection with the January police shooting in St Augustine that left her partner Joshua Samaroo dead and Sealy seriously injured. The new allegations add to an already high-profile case that sparked public debate over police conduct and the handling of the investigation.
Kaia Sealy is facing additional firearm and ammunition-related charges linked to the January police shooting in St Augustine.
Authorities said Sealy, 24, now faces four additional charges related to firearm and ammunition offences following a virtual court hearing this week. The new allegations include possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm to endanger life and discharging a firearm within 40 metres of a public place.
The charges are tied to the January 20 incident near College Road and Bassie Street Extension in St Augustine, where police officers opened fire on a vehicle carrying Sealy and Samaroo. Samaroo was killed during the encounter while Sealy was left paralysed. Earlier this month, investigators also obtained warrants accusing Sealy of manslaughter in Samaroo’s death and three counts of shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm against police officers.
The case drew widespread public attention after video footage of the shooting circulated online, prompting protests and calls for accountability from activists, relatives and opposition figures. Police officials said the charges followed legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions after investigators reviewed evidence gathered in the months following the shooting. Authorities also confirmed that some warrants have not yet been executed because Sealy remains outside Trinidad and Tobago’s jurisdiction.
