Pan on D’Avenue XII could still take place Aug. 30 after organizers initially canceled the annual steelpan celebration because of a funding and infrastructure shortfall. New sponsors and previously contacted companies have since come forward with support, reopening discussions about staging the event.
Pan on D’Avenue XII was scheduled for Aug. 30 but was initially canceled over a funding and infrastructure shortfall.
The Woodbrook/St. James Community Association announced the cancellation Thursday, saying it had not secured enough financial and logistical support for the event along Ariapita Avenue. Organizers had sought assistance to cover costs associated with steelbands, roadways, sound, lighting and barriers, while also appealing to the government, businesses and other potential supporters to help close the remaining gaps.
Association chairperson Ayana Garcia said Friday that new sponsors and companies previously approached by organizers were now offering assistance. Discussions are continuing to determine whether the remaining requirements can be met, although organizers had not formally announced that the event was back on as of Friday. The event, founded by the late Woodbrook councillor Cleveland Garcia, has become an annual community steelpan celebration along Ariapita Avenue.
Pan on D’Avenue XII was scheduled for Aug. 30, one day before the Ministry of Culture’s planned Independence Day pan event on Aug. 31. The latest sponsorship efforts could determine whether the community celebration returns this year, but organizers are working against a limited timetable to secure the funding and infrastructure needed to stage it.
