A dispute within the People’s National Movement’s San Fernando East constituency has intensified after the constituency executive publicly criticized its parliamentary representative, Brian Manning. The development comes despite PNM Chairman Marvin Gonzales urging party members to keep internal disagreements within the party’s established processes.
PNM Chairman Marvin Gonzales has urged party members to resolve internal disagreements through established party processes.
The dispute began in June after Manning wrote to PNM leadership raising concerns about constituency matters, several of which involved constituency chairwoman Patricia Alexis. A party-appointed team subsequently investigated the concerns and submitted a report, with the party indicating that action was being taken based on its recommendations. Manning later questioned aspects of that investigation, prompting the latest public response from the constituency executive.
In a statement posted on the San Fernando East constituency’s Facebook page, the executive defended Alexis and criticized Manning’s handling of the dispute, arguing that public allegations could undermine the party’s internal process. It also pointed to the constituency’s electoral results, noting that the PNM’s margin in San Fernando East fell from 5,173 votes in 2020 to 673 votes following the 2025 election recount. Manning’s supporters, meanwhile, have claimed that a no-confidence vote against him failed and alleged that the latest statement was issued without collective authorization. Alexis did not respond to Guardian Media’s questions about the statement, while Manning did not specifically address the executive’s latest response.
The dispute places renewed attention on tensions within the PNM as the party manages disagreements between elected representatives and constituency organizations. Manning remains the PNM’s member of Parliament for San Fernando East, while Gonzales has called for internal issues to be handled through party structures rather than public exchanges. Parliament lists Manning as the current MP for San Fernando East, and the constituency dispute remains subject to the party’s internal processes..
