Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander says residents in Belmont have been calling for Zones of Special Operations measures as concerns over violent crime continue. The comments come amid renewed debate over anti-crime legislation that previously failed to pass in Parliament.
Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander says residents in Belmont have been urging authorities to implement Zones of Special Operations measures in response to ongoing violence in the community.
Alexander made the remarks while addressing continued concerns over crime in parts of Port of Spain and surrounding districts. According to the minister, residents affected by repeated shootings and gang-related activity have expressed support for stronger security operations aimed at restoring order and improving public safety.
The proposed Zones of Special Operations legislation, commonly referred to as ZOSO, was designed to allow enhanced law enforcement activity in communities experiencing serious criminal activity while also introducing social support programs and development initiatives. The legislation did not receive enough support in the Senate earlier this year.
Alexander maintained that some residents living in high-crime areas believe the measures could help reduce violence and increase security within their communities. The issue has remained politically contentious, with critics raising concerns about civil liberties, oversight and the scope of law enforcement powers under the proposed framework.
Belmont has experienced several violent incidents in recent years, including fatal shootings linked to ongoing gang conflicts. Residents have repeatedly appealed for increased police presence, community development programs and long-term crime prevention efforts as authorities continue attempts to address criminal activity across the capital and nearby areas.
