Officials from the Ministry of Culture and Community Development confirmed that the fireworks will use silent pyrotechnics and be choreographed as part of the Aug. 31 celebrations. The programme will also include a drone presentation and cultural performances featuring steelpan, calypso, soca, chutney, tassa, folk music and theatrical presentations. The changes follow concerns raised by animal welfare and community stakeholders about the effects of loud fireworks on pets, wildlife and nearby residents.

The decision comes after last year’s state-sponsored Independence Day fireworks were canceled amid security concerns during a state of emergency. This year’s celebrations are taking place under new fireworks regulations that introduced a permit system and restrictions around sensitive locations, including hospitals, zoos, airports, animal shelters, farms and national parks.
