Police and rescue teams searched rough coastal waters in Tobago where the body of a child was last seen.
Police in Trinidad and Tobago say a suspect has confessed to killing two-year-old Angelo Tobias-Plaza after nine days of searches across Tobago failed to locate the missing child.
Angelo was reported missing from his home in Goodwood, Tobago, on May 11, triggering a large-scale search operation involving police, volunteers and rescue teams. Investigators searched multiple locations, including coastal areas, the Studley Park landfill and surrounding communities, as public concern intensified over the toddler’s disappearance.
Authorities said a close male relative admitted to strangling the child and disposing of the body at sea. Police returned to the child’s seaside home on Cambridge Trace on Tuesday after the suspect reportedly provided investigators with additional information connected to the case.
Crime scene investigators processed the area while officers continued efforts to locate the child’s remains. Several people were initially detained during the investigation, though police later released most of them as inquiries continued.
The case has drawn widespread attention across Trinidad and Tobago, with residents in Goodwood gathering for vigils and prayer sessions during the search effort. Community members expressed grief and outrage as news of the alleged confession spread through the village.
Police have not announced whether additional charges are expected as the investigation remains ongoing.
