Police Constable Charged With Ammunition Possession

A Trinidad and Tobago police constable has been charged with possession of ammunition after he was intercepted while off duty in Couva. Police said 10 rounds of 9 mm ammunition were allegedly found in his vehicle during an intelligence-led operation
Police intercepted an off-duty constable along Southern Main Road, Couva, during an intelligence-led operation.
PC Avinash Kussie, who was last attached to the Couva Police Station, was arrested Aug. 17 after officers stopped a black Nissan Sylphy along Southern Main Road, Couva. Police searched the vehicle and allegedly found a black plastic bag containing the ammunition. Kussie was taken to the Chaguanas Police Station, while officers searched his home and locker at the Couva station; no illegal items were found during those searches.
The investigation was conducted by officers from the Central Division Operations Unit and Central Division Task Force, Area South, under senior police supervision. A file was submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions on Aug. 24, and instructions to charge Kussie were received the following day. The case underscores the police service's stated policy that officers accused of breaking the law are subject to investigation and the judicial process like any other citizen.
