Two moderate earthquakes were recorded near Trinidad and Tobago early Monday morning, with tremors felt across parts of both Trinidad and Tobago. Authorities reported no immediate injuries or damage as seismic monitoring agencies continued to assess the events.

Two earthquakes struck near Trinidad and Tobago within roughly 70 minutes on Monday morning, causing shaking that was felt across several areas of the country. The first earthquake, measured at magnitude 5.1 by the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC), occurred at about 5:45 a.m. northeast of Tobago, while the second, measured at magnitude 5.0, was recorded shortly before 7 a.m. northwest of Trinidad. No reports of injuries or significant damage were immediately recorded.
The first tremor was located approximately 24 kilometres northeast of Scarborough, Tobago, at a depth of about 59 kilometres, while the second earthquake occurred about 67 kilometres northwest of Port of Spain at a deeper location. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) issued slightly different preliminary measurements, recording the Tobago event at magnitude 5.2 and the second event at magnitude 4.8. Variations between monitoring agencies are common as seismic data is reviewed and refined after an earthquake occurs.
Trinidad and Tobago sits near the boundary between the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates, an area that experiences regular seismic activity. The UWI Seismic Research Centre, which monitors earthquakes across the Eastern Caribbean, said the two events occurred in different seismic areas, with the Tobago earthquake taking place in a less frequently active location compared with the region north of Trinidad, which has historically recorded more earthquake activity. Officials said there was no tsunami threat associated with either event.
