The FIFA World Cup round of 16 field is complete following a series of dramatic Round of 32 matches across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Traditional powers and emerging nations now move into the next knockout stage with quarterfinal places at stake.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup enters the round of 16 on Saturday with the knockout bracket finalized after six days of Round of 32 action that featured penalty shootouts, extra-time thrillers and several major upsets. Defending champion Argentina needed extra time to eliminate World Cup debutant Cape Verde, while Paraguay knocked out Germany and Morocco eliminated the Netherlands in penalty shootouts. Belgium, Portugal, England, France, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, the United States, Switzerland, Norway, Egypt, Colombia, Canada and Morocco also secured places in the tournament's final 16 teams.
The round of 16 begins Saturday with co-host Canada facing Morocco in Houston before Paraguay meets France in Philadelphia. Sunday's schedule features Brazil against Norway in East Rutherford, New Jersey, followed by co-host Mexico taking on England at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca. Monday's slate includes one of the marquee ties of the tournament as Portugal faces Spain in Arlington, Texas, before the United States meets Belgium in Seattle. The final two matches on Tuesday will see Argentina play Egypt in Atlanta and Switzerland face Colombia in Vancouver. The winners will advance to the quarterfinals, which begin July 9.
The expanded 48-team World Cup is the first to feature a Round of 32, increasing the number of knockout matches and creating more opportunities for emerging football nations to challenge established powers. That format has already produced several memorable moments, including Cape Verde's historic run to the knockout stage, Morocco's penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands and Paraguay's elimination of Germany. With only 16 teams remaining, the tournament now shifts into a win-or-go-home phase that will determine the semifinalists before the championship match on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey
