Five Killed After Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes at Miami Airport

The aircraft was operating as 21 Air Flight 7598 when it overran the runway at about 2 p.m. local time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The plane continued beyond the airport boundary, where it struck multiple vehicles and caught fire. Emergency crews found heavy flames and smoke and deployed more than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units to the scene. The five injured people included three who were in critical condition, according to authorities. It was not immediately clear whether those killed were aboard the aircraft or on the ground.

The crash temporarily halted airport operations, with the FAA issuing a ground stop and runways and taxiways closed as emergency crews worked at the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the accident, while the FAA is also examining the circumstances surrounding the runway overrun. The aircraft, a Boeing 767-300, had previously operated as a passenger aircraft before being converted to a freighter in 2015. The incident occurred at one of the United States' busiest airports and was expected to cause significant delays and possible cancellations as investigators examined the wreckage and crews addressed a fuel leak.
