ALICE SPRINGS, Australia (AP) — Riots erupted in Alice Springs after the death of a five-year-old Indigenous girl sparked grief, anger, and clashes between protesters and police.
The child, known locally by her Indigenous name Kumanjayi Little Baby, was found dead after a search operation in central Australia. Police allege she was abducted and killed by a 47-year-old man, who was later arrested.
Her death led to hundreds gathering near Alice Springs Hospital, where tensions escalated into violence. Police used tear gas and crowd-control measures after objects were thrown and property was damaged.
Authorities urged calm and said the justice system would handle the case. Indigenous leaders called for respect during mourning while also highlighting long-standing social issues affecting remote communities.
The suspect has been moved to Darwin for security reasons and is expected to face formal charges as investigations continue.
