Chancellor Friedrich Mertz, Germany warns the United States lacks a clear exit strategy in the Iran conflict, highlights European offers to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and urges a swift end to hostilities to stem mounting economic damage.
Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Mertz, made the statements when Speaking to students in the German town of Marsberg on Monday
Chancellor Friedrich Mertz sharply criticized the United States’ handling of the confrontation with Iran, saying “The Americans clearly have no strategy” and warning that “you don't just have to go in, you also have to get out again,” citing past interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
He said U.S. diplomatic efforts have so far produced no results and painted Iran — and particularly the Revolutionary Guards — as negotiating in a way that has humiliated a nation and left Iran stronger than expected.
Mertz reiterated Europe’s offer to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz after fighting ends, including German minesweepers to clear suspected mines, but stressed such assistance depends on a cessation of hostilities.
He warned the conflict is “having a direct negative effect on our economy” and called for an urgent end to the war to relieve taxpayers and stabilize trade.
