Cuba has begun freeing more than 2,000 prisoners in one of its largest mass releases in years, as pressure from the United States intensifies and questions remain over whether political detainees are included.
Freed prisoners embrace relatives as Cuba begins a mass release of over 2,000 inmates
Cuba has started releasing more than 2,000 prisoners following a sweeping government pardon described as a “humanitarian” gesture. The move, one of the largest in over a decade, comes during Holy Week and follows a smaller release of inmates earlier this year.
Officials say those selected were chosen based on factors such as time served, good conduct, and health conditions, with women, youth, elderly prisoners, and some foreigners among those eligible. However, authorities have not disclosed a full list of those being freed.
Fuel shortages and blackouts have intensified pressure on Cuba’s government.
The mass release comes amid escalating pressure from the administration of Donald Trump, which has imposed a harsh economic squeeze on the island, including restrictions on fuel shipments that have triggered widespread blackouts and shortages.
While Cuba denies acting under U.S. influence, the timing has drawn scrutiny, with Washington continuing to demand the release of political prisoners and broader reforms
Global energy markets have also been shaken by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping route. Maritime traffic through the strait has dropped sharply, driving up oil prices and increasing fears of a prolonged global economic impact.
In a national address, President Trump declared that the war is “nearing completion” and highlighted what he described as major military successes, including damage to Iran’s military infrastructure. However, he also warned that further strikes—potentially targeting Iran’s oil facilities—remain an option if Tehran does not comply with U.S. demands.
Despite these claims, Iran continues to demonstrate resilience, maintaining missile capabilities and regional influence while rejecting calls to surrender.
Cuban Prison: Authorities have not released a full list of those pardoned
The release unfolds against the backdrop of a deepening economic crisis driven in part by fuel shortages and international isolation. Recent developments, including limited easing of oil shipments, have provided some relief, but tensions between Havana and Washington remain high.
Whether the массовое pardon represents a humanitarian step or a strategic response to mounting geopolitical pressure remains unclear, but it has once again placed Cuba at the center of international attention.
