The Israeli military has dropped charges against soldiers accused of abusing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention facility.

Israel’s military prosecutor has dropped charges against five soldiers who were accused of abusing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention camp, a facility that has been widely scrutinized during the Gaza war.

The soldiers had been charged in connection with an alleged assault on a detainee from Gaza in 2024. According to investigators, the detainee suffered severe injuries, including broken ribs and lung damage, after being beaten and sexually abused while in custody. The alleged incident was partially captured on surveillance footage that later circulated publicly.

However, Israel’s Military Advocate General said the charges could not proceed due to what were described as “exceptional circumstances.” Officials cited issues including questions about the handling of video evidence and the inability to secure testimony from the alleged victim, who was later released to Gaza as part of a ceasefire agreement.

The case had drawn significant attention in Israel and internationally. It was seen by some observers as a test of whether the military justice system would hold soldiers accountable for alleged abuses committed during the ongoing conflict.

Human rights organizations strongly criticized the decision to drop the charges. Groups including Amnesty Internationalargued that the move sends a troubling message about accountability for the treatment of Palestinian detainees and could contribute to a climate of impunity.

The controversy also comes amid broader scrutiny of conditions at the Sde Teiman detention facility, located in southern Israel. The camp was established during the Gaza war to hold Palestinians captured during military operations, and multiple former detainees and rights groups have alleged cases of mistreatment there.

The decision to drop the charges has also drawn political reactions within Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuexpressed support for the soldiers, while critics say the case highlights ongoing concerns about oversight and accountability in wartime detention practices.

The development is likely to intensify international debate over the treatment of detainees during the Gaza conflict and the responsibilities of military justice systems in investigating alleged abuses.
