Israeli settlers besiege Palestinian families in West Bank

Israeli settlers have besieged three Palestinian families in the West Bank village of Qusra, blocking access to their homes and cutting off water, electricity and essential supplies. The standoff has drawn an unusually strong rebuke from the United States as Israeli forces moved into the area after several days of escalating tensions.

The families, numbering about 15 people including children, were trapped inside their homes after settlers established themselves around the properties and prevented residents from leaving, according to Palestinian residents and rights groups. Israeli troops intervened several times, but the settlers returned. On Thursday, the Israeli military said it had dismantled two illegal settler outposts in Qusra and a nearby village and detained one Israeli, while additional troops were deployed to patrol the area. Palestinian officials said Israeli forces also entered or occupied several homes as part of the response.

The confrontation has drawn attention because U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee condemned the settlers involved as terrorists, marking an unusually sharp criticism from the Trump administration of Israeli settlers. Qusra, south of Nablus, has experienced repeated settler attacks as violence has increased across the occupied West Bank. Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war, and the territory remains central to competing Israeli and Palestinian claims, with Israeli settlement expansion continuing under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
