British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing growing calls to resign after major Labour Party losses in local elections across the United Kingdom. More than 80 lawmakers have publicly urged him to step aside, though Starmer says he will remain in office.

Keir Starmer is facing mounting pressure from within the Labour Party after heavy losses in local and regional elections intensified concerns over his leadership.
More than 80 Labour lawmakers have publicly called on Starmer to resign or set a timetable for his departure following the party’s poor electoral performance across England, Scotland and Wales. Several parliamentary aides have also resigned in recent days, increasing pressure on the British prime minister.
Despite the growing backlash, Starmer told cabinet ministers Tuesday that he does not intend to step down and said no formal leadership challenge has been triggered under party rules. He warned that political instability could damage the British economy and undermine the government’s agenda.
The crisis follows one of Labour’s worst local election performances in years, with the party losing support to Reform UK, the Green Party and nationalist parties in Scotland and Wales. Analysts say dissatisfaction over the economy, immigration and internal party disputes contributed to the setbacks.
Senior Labour figures have continued private discussions over the party’s future leadership, although several cabinet ministers publicly backed Starmer and urged unity. Potential successors, including senior ministers, are already being discussed in British political circles as uncertainty over Starmer’s future continues.
