U.S. President Donald Trump has demanded that international allies help secure the Strait of Hormuz, as the escalating conflict with Iran threatens global energy supplies and maritime security.

The narrow waterway between Iran and Oman is one of the most critical oil transit routes in the world, carrying roughly 20% of global oil shipments. Disruptions caused by the conflict have raised fears of a major supply shock in global energy markets.

Allies reluctant to send naval forces

The Trump administration has reportedly approached several nations, including Japan, Australia, France, the United Kingdom, South Korea, and China, asking them to help protect shipping lanes and escort commercial vessels through the strait.

However, some key allies have signaled hesitation. Officials in Japan and Australia said they currently have no plans to send warships, citing legal limitations and the absence of a formal multinational mission.

Oil markets on edge

The conflict has disrupted shipping across the Persian Gulf, where several commercial vessels and energy facilities have reportedly been targeted. Some oil tankers have delayed departures or rerouted shipments, tightening supply in global markets.

Energy analysts warn that prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could trigger sharp increases in oil prices and further volatility in global energy markets.

Regional tensions intensify

The crisis is part of a broader escalation across the Middle East involving Iran, Israel, and U.S. forces. Military strikes, drone attacks, and missile launches have been reported across several areas of the region.

Iran has rejected claims that it is seeking negotiations and has warned it will respond to any further attacks. Meanwhile, clashes continue involving Iranian-backed groups in Lebanon.

Pressure on allies continues

Trump has warned that countries heavily dependent on oil transported through the strait should play a role in securing it, suggesting that future diplomatic relations could be affected if allies decline to assist.

Meanwhile, European governments are discussing whether to expand existing naval patrol missions in the region, although no final decisions have been announced.
