Trump Says US, Iran in ‘Semi-Negotiations’ Over Hormuz

The contacts are being conducted through intermediaries, with Oman playing a role in transmitting positions between the two sides, while Iran has continued to resist U.S. demands for an unrestricted reopening of the waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important energy corridors, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Large volumes of crude oil and other energy products normally pass through the narrow waterway, making prolonged restrictions a major concern for international energy markets and global shipping. The current standoff has also involved U.S. military forces operating in and around the region, increasing the importance of the limited diplomatic contacts as Washington seeks to restore maritime traffic without returning to broader military confrontation.
