Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf handles most of Iran’s crude oil exports and has become a key target in the escalating U.S.–Iran conflict.
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to strike Iran’s vital oil export infrastructure on Kharg Island if Tehran continues disrupting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy routes. The warning came after U.S. forces carried out strikes on military targets on the island, which handles the majority of Iran’s crude oil exports.
Kharg Island is responsible for around 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports, making it one of the most strategically important energy facilities in the Middle East. The U.S. military said the recent operation targeted military assets and avoided oil infrastructure for now, but Trump warned that decision could change if Iran continues threatening international shipping lanes.
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial global energy corridor where about 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.
The warning comes amid the ongoing 2026 Iran war, which erupted after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February. In response, Iran has launched missile and drone attacks across the region and threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway through which roughly 20% of global oil supplies pass.
Analysts say any attack on Iran’s oil infrastructure or prolonged disruption to shipping could trigger severe economic consequences worldwide. Energy markets are already volatile, and governments are closely monitoring the situation as military forces build up across the Persian Gulf.
The broader conflict has spread beyond Iran and Israel, with missile and drone attacks reported in Iraq, Lebanon, and Gulf states. The United States has deployed additional naval forces and Marines to the region to protect shipping routes and support operations if tensions escalate further.
Despite growing international concern, both Washington and Tehran have signaled they are prepared for continued confrontation, raising fears that the crisis could expand into a wider regional war.
