WASHINGTON — Trump made the remarks Friday as questions mounted over the toll of the Lincoln’s extended deployment on its roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines. The carrier has been deployed for more than 260 days and has remained continuously at sea for more than 240 days, according to the Associated Press, marking a record stretch for the ship. Reports from military families and lawmakers have raised concerns about fatigue, supplies, sanitation and mental health among the crew, while the Navy has disputed some of the most serious allegations and said it has not identified an increase in suicidal thoughts or attempts aboard the carrier.

The Lincoln’s deployment has been extended as the United States continues military operations against Iran, placing additional demands on the Navy’s carrier fleet. The ship originally deployed from San Diego in November and was subsequently redirected to the Middle East as the conflict developed. Its prolonged presence has meant an unusually long period without a port visit, limiting opportunities for sailors to go ashore and for the ship to receive routine support and maintenance. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has rejected reports portraying conditions aboard the carrier as severely deteriorated, while lawmakers have sought additional information from the Pentagon about the crew’s welfare and the ship’s operating conditions.

The Navy has begun preparing a replacement, with the USS George Washington being sent toward the Middle East to relieve the Lincoln. Trump said the Lincoln would soon be replaced, although the exact timing of its return has not been publicly established. The carrier rotation comes as U.S. forces maintain a substantial military presence in the region and continue operations connected to the conflict with Iran, making the Lincoln’s deployment part of a broader strain on the Navy’s available forces. The controversy has placed renewed attention on how long aircraft carriers and their crews can sustain wartime operations without the normal cycle of port visits, maintenance and personnel recovery.
