U.S. forces disabled two Iranian oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz after an exchange of fire with Iranian forces overnight, according to statements released Friday by the U.S. military.
American officials said the vessels were targeted after allegedly attempting to break through a blockade involving Iranian ports. The military also reported that U.S. naval forces intercepted attacks directed at three Navy ships operating in the strategic waterway before carrying out strikes on Iranian military positions in the area.
The developments marked another escalation in tensions surrounding the Gulf region despite a ceasefire that has been in place for approximately one month. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical shipping routes for global oil supplies, and renewed fighting has raised concerns over regional stability and international energy markets.
Meanwhile, authorities in the United Arab Emirates reported another missile and drone attack launched from Iran, further increasing fears of a broader regional confrontation. Details regarding damage or casualties from the reported attack were not immediately confirmed.
Iranian officials separately announced the seizure of an oil tanker accused of attempting to interfere with the country’s oil exports, according to state-linked media reports. Tehran has continued to accuse the United States and its allies of disrupting Iranian shipping and increasing military pressure in the Gulf.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington is awaiting a response from Iran regarding the latest proposal aimed at reducing tensions, reopening maritime routes and addressing concerns surrounding Tehran’s nuclear activities.
The latest confrontation has intensified uncertainty over diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region as both sides continue military operations and exchange accusations over security in the Gulf.
