US, Iran exchange attacks after monthlong lull

The United States and Iran have exchanged attacks after more than a month without direct U.S. strikes on Iranian territory. The latest escalation began with a U.S. attack on Iranian launchers on Larak Island and was followed by Iran’s retaliatory missile strikes against U.S. military positions in Jordan.

U.S. forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, marking the first known American strikes on Iran since late July. U.S. officials said Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were preparing to launch rockets and deploy sea mines into the strategically important waterway, where American forces had recently cleared mines from shipping routes. Iran said the U.S. attack killed and wounded several soldiers and civilians and vowed a response.

Iran subsequently carried out what the Revolutionary Guard described as retaliatory attacks against U.S. military bases in Jordan. The IRGC said it launched ballistic missiles at the King Hussein and Al-Azraq air bases, while Jordanian authorities said eight missiles entering the country's airspace were intercepted before causing significant damage. Iran also said it targeted U.S. forces at Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, but Emirati authorities denied that the base had been attacked and said an Iranian drone was intercepted over its waters.

The exchange marks a renewed escalation in the six-month U.S.-Iran conflict and comes as Washington has increasingly emphasized economic pressure on Tehran. The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the confrontation because it is a major route for global oil shipments, and the renewed fighting has raised fresh concerns about maritime security and energy supplies. The escalation also comes as the Trump administration pursues additional sanctions against Iran, while both sides remain locked in a broader confrontation with no clear end to the conflict.
