The United States launched new strikes in southern Iran while diplomatic talks over a broader ceasefire and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz continued in Qatar. American officials described the operation as a defensive action aimed at protecting U.S. forces amid ongoing tensions in the region.
U.S. military vessels patrol near the Strait of Hormuz as ceasefire negotiations continue between Washington and Tehran.
U.S. Central Command said American forces carried out “self-defense” strikes targeting missile launch sites and boats allegedly attempting to lay mines in southern Iran. The strikes came despite a fragile ceasefire that has remained in place since April following weeks of conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
Iranian state-linked media reported explosions near Bandar Abbas and said several members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard were killed. Iranian officials were simultaneously in Qatar for negotiations focused on extending the ceasefire, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and discussing broader issues tied to sanctions and Iran’s nuclear program
President Donald Trump said negotiations with Tehran were continuing, though Secretary of State Marco Rubio cautioned that a final agreement could still take several days. The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the talks because the waterway handles a major share of global oil shipments and has faced repeated disruptions during the conflict.
The latest military action highlighted the difficulty of balancing ongoing diplomacy with regional security concerns. Israel also continued strikes against Hezbollah-linked targets in Lebanon, adding pressure to negotiations already complicated by disagreements over Iran’s nuclear activities, sanctions relief and long-term security arrangements in the Middle East.
