More than 140 American service members have been wounded since the start of the war with Iran, according to the Pentagon, highlighting the growing risks facing U.S. forces as the conflict spreads across the Middle East.
U.S. officials say around eight troops suffered serious injuries, while the majority of the wounded have already returned to duty after receiving treatment.
The injuries come after Iranian missile and drone attacks targeted American military facilities and allied bases across the region in retaliation for U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian military infrastructure.
The Pentagon said the total number of injured troops is significantly higher than early estimates released during the opening days of the conflict. Many of the wounds were caused by blast impacts, shrapnel, and concussive injuriesduring missile strikes on bases housing American personnel.
U.S. officials emphasized that most of the injuries were considered minor, and over 100 service members have already returned to active duty following medical treatment.
However, the Pentagon confirmed that eight troops remain in serious condition and continue to receive specialized care.
The conflict began on February 28 after joint U.S. and Israeli strikes targeted Iranian military and nuclear facilities, prompting widespread retaliatory attacks from Tehran and its allies.
Iran has since launched missiles and drones at bases, infrastructure and allied targets across several Middle Eastern countries where U.S. forces are stationed.
The fighting has also led to American fatalities. U.S. Central Command previously confirmed that several U.S. service members were killed in early attacks on military installations in the region.
Military analysts warn that the growing number of wounded troops underscores how exposed U.S. forces remain as the war continues.
American personnel are stationed at multiple bases across the Middle East, many of which lie within range of Iranian missile and drone capabilities.
While U.S. officials say defensive systems have intercepted many incoming projectiles, the Pentagon has acknowledged that continued attacks could result in additional casualties if the conflict escalates further.
For now, U.S. military leaders say their focus remains on protecting personnel while continuing operations against Iranian military targets.
