NATO scrambled fighter jets from multiple European allies to intercept Russian bombers and escort fighters over the Baltic Sea, highlighting rising military tensions along Europe’s eastern flank amid ongoing Russia–West friction.
NATO aircraft intercepted and monitored Russian bombers during a routine patrol over the Baltic Sea.
NATO forces intercepted a formation of Russian strategic bombers and fighter jets over the Baltic Sea this week, in a coordinated multinational response involving several European air forces. The Russian aircraft were detected flying in international airspace but near NATO-monitored zones, prompting a rapid scramble of fighter jets from countries including France, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Denmark, and Romania.
French Rafale jets were among multiple NATO aircraft scrambled in response to the Russian formation.
The Russian formation reportedly included two Tu-22M3 long-range bombers escorted by approximately ten Su-30 and Su-35 fighter jets. NATO aircraft tracked and visually identified the group as part of standard air policing operations in the region. Russian authorities said the flight was pre-planned and conducted in accordance with international airspace rules over neutral waters.
The incident reflects a continuing pattern of NATO intercepts in the Baltic region, where Russian military aircraft frequently operate near alliance airspace without active transponders or flight plans. While no violations of NATO airspace were reported, the encounter underscores persistent military friction between Russia and NATO amid broader geopolitical tensions across Europe.
