Two Workers Rescued Alive From Nepal Flood Tunnel

Two workers have been rescued alive from a hydropower tunnel in Nepal, nine days after catastrophic flooding struck the Nepal-China border region. The rescue offers renewed hope as emergency teams continue searching for hundreds of people still missing after the disaster.

Floodwaters and debris have devastated communities and infrastructure along Nepal's Trishuli River following the Aug. 26 disaster.

The two men, identified as Sanjay Sah and Kabir Maharjan, were found inside the Trishuli 3A hydropower tunnel in Rasuwa district and brought out by Nepal Army and Armed Police teams Friday. Rescuers located them after detecting signs of life inside the tunnel, where floodwaters and thick mud had trapped workers. Both men were taken for medical treatment, with Sah reported in stable condition and Maharjan requiring hospital care.

The Aug. 26 disaster followed an ice, rock and mudslide in the Himalayan region that caused devastating flooding along the Trishuli River and affected communities on both sides of the Nepal-China border. Nepalese authorities have reported more than 1,250 deaths and thousands of missing people, while Chinese authorities have reported 21 deaths and hundreds missing in Tibet. About 900 hydropower workers remain unaccounted for across several projects, with rescue teams facing extensive mud, damaged infrastructure and blocked tunnel entrances as they continue searching for survivors.
